Life at School

Curious about what everyday life at a folk high school is like? At Bakketun, it's about much more than just courses and classes. Afternoons, evenings, and weekends are filled with activities, trips, and a strong social community.

The Dormitory – A Home Away from Home

På internatet bor du sammen med 8-12 andre elever. Internatene skaper små, inkluderende fellesskap hvor du både får nye venner og lærer å samarbeide og ta ansvar. Boenhetene har også koselige stuer som innbyr til hyggelige kvelder.

Leisure Time

There is always something happening in your free time! Many students gather for game nights, movie nights, or baking in the student kitchen, while others take the initiative for spontaneous trips in the surrounding area.

For those who enjoy being active, the bouldering room and skate hall are popular choices, or you can opt for a quiet evening in the cozy lounges. Several specialized school rooms are open in the afternoons and evenings, allowing students to explore their own projects or enjoy activities together. You can work out in the gym, experiment in the ceramics workshop, organize a movie night in the black box theater, or practice music in the rehearsal rooms.

There is always space for both community and personal interests!

Student Evenings

Every Friday night, we host student evenings, one of the week’s biggest highlights. These are planned and organized by student leaders or, occasionally, by the classes themselves. The evenings often feature creative themes, entertainment, and surprises. Whether it’s costume parties, quizzes, talent shows, or improvised performances, the atmosphere is always lively and full of laughter.

Social Activities

Every autumn, we establish different recreational teams where students can take leadership roles and organize parts of the school’s social life. Being part of one of these teams provides leadership experience, which is also recorded on your school certificate.

  • Sports Team: Organizes various physical activities, including ball games, yoga, dancing, and running.
  • Culture Team: Responsible for music and cultural activities, planning theme nights and creative events.
  • Faith Team: Leads voluntary Christian activities, which may include overnight trips, pub nights, chapel gatherings, and guest visits.
  • Assistance Team: Runs our aid project, organizing activities and challenges to raise funds for charity.

    Annual Events

    • Kro, Wednesdays: A relaxed gathering in the lounge, often with live music and good conversations.
    • Charity Run – An annual event to raise money for the Baan Chivit Mai orphanage in Thailand.
    • Green Week – A sustainability-themed week with workshops, activities, and a focus on environmental initiatives.

      Trips and Excursions

Beyond campus life, we go on both small and large trips as a group. These can range from day trips for kayaking and swimming to longer journeys to Trondheim or Åre. These excursions offer amazing opportunities to experience new things together, strengthen friendships, and connect across different courses.

For many, the highlight of the year is the school-wide trip to Spain and Gibraltar. This adventure includes exploration, culture, history, sunshine, swimming, and plenty of quality time together.

      Weekly Structure

Each week follows its own rhythm, but the general structure looks like this:
