When does the school year start and end?
The 2026/27 school year starts on August 22 and ends on May 15. It is a packed school year with classes also on some Saturdays, often combined with student evenings and social activities.
How much does it cost to go to Bakketun?
The price varies depending on the line chosen and room type. The basic price for board and lodging starts at approx. NOK 95,950 for a double room without a bathroom. In addition, there are line costs (from approx. NOK 22,464 to NOK 49,788 depending on the line) and common costs.

Can I get scholarships and loans?
Yes! You can apply for support from the Lånekassen. For a full year at folk high school you can be paid up to NOK 151,690 (2025–26). 60 % is a loan, 40 % can be converted into a scholarship if you complete the year and have less than 10 % undocumented absence. Read more at lanekassen.no.
What is boarding school life like?
At Bakketun you live in cozy dormitories divided into smaller living units with 8–14 students. Here you share a living room, dormitory kitchen and bathroom, and there is often a lot of socializing. Most people share a room with a fellow student, but we also have some single rooms available.

When can I apply, and how does the admission process work?
You can apply from November 15th of the year before school starts. We have ongoing admissions until school starts – so it pays to be early, as some lines fill up quickly. Link to application form: https://www.folkehogskole.no/index.php?page_id=80&skole_id=3
Do I have to be a Christian to go to Bakketun?
No. Bakketun is a Christian folk high school affiliated with Normisjon, but everyone is welcome regardless of faith or outlook on life. We have a daily joint gathering with "word of the day", and voluntary gatherings outside of school hours for those who wish. Our values are safety, generosity and joy of life - and they apply to everyone.
Do I get credits for attending folk high school?
No, you normally do not receive formal credits for attending a folk high school. And from autumn 2027 you will not receive competitive points for admission to higher education as before. This is a tightening of competitive points for education made by the authorities that applies to all folk high schools.
What tours can I join?
All lines have their own study trips (e.g. Australia, Asia, New York and London). In addition, the whole school goes on a joint trip to Spain and Gibraltar. You can read more about our trips here: https://bakketun.fhs.no/studieturer/
What do we do in our free time?
At Bakketun there is always something going on! Fridays we have a stipend night, Saturdays a student night – and otherwise there is room for everything from movie and game nights to training, bouldering, music, baking and spontaneous trips. Here you will find both community and room for your own interests.
How is the food at Bakketun?
At Bakketun you are served breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Our kitchen emphasizes preparing nutritious and varied food, and we are good at adapting to different needs and wishes from the students. You can look forward to everything from traditional dinners to creative dishes and delicious salad buffets. Our chefs are both skilled and pleasant – and greatly appreciate input from you students!

What is the age limit?
Bakketun has several lines that are open to applicants from the age of 16. You can read more here: Folk high school from the age of 16.
Sport Extreme Australia, Challenge Explore and Norway – language, culture and travel have a minimum age limit of 18. However, the school can make exceptions in some cases, so please contact us or submit an application if you are younger and would like a place on one of these courses.
Is snus and smoking allowed at Bakketun?
Yes, snus and tobacco are allowed at Bakketun. Smoking must take place in a separate marked area.
