Travel, country, people and culture
Join us on the journey and explore the world with us. Experience encounters that leave a mark!
Reis Explore is for those of you who are curious about the world around you and who want to challenge yourself through cultural encounters, travel and outdoor activities. Here you can open up new perspectives on the world around you and discover new aspects of yourself.
One of the highlights of the year is the time at the Baan Chivit Mai orphanage in Northern Thailand, for which we raise money during the year. Here you will have a unique opportunity to contribute, while gaining insight into the everyday lives of children and young people who grow up in different circumstances than us. The trip to Asia will also offer fantastic food, exciting markets, temples, elephants and visits.
In Australia we visit the local community of Lila, where we learn about the cultural heritage and history of the area. We head out into the Australian desert, where we sleep under the open sky and truly experience the greatness of being out in nature. It's about challenging your own limits and experiencing the world in a new way. We will also spend time in Sydney, getting to know the surrounding area, such as Bondi Beach, and there will be an opportunity to skydive for those who wish.
Outdoor activities are a central part of the program, and you will learn basic outdoor activities so that you will be more confident in planning your own trips in the future. The program includes going on a multi-day backpacking trip, cooking on a campfire, a cabin trip or spending the night under the open sky. You will also get to try out activities such as cave walking, ice swimming, canyoning and sea kayaking. Together we will explore nature and become safer in it!
Subject areas
Everyday life at home – also full of content
We actively use the nature around us. There will be hikes in the local area, campfire evenings and winter activities. You will gain basic outdoor experience and become confident with a map and compass, and in planning and carrying out hikes yourself. You will become part of a community where it is easy to be yourself, and where you cheer each other on – both in everyday life and when your limits are tested.
Aid and cultural understanding are subject areas that have the greatest weight on the study trip, but which we also focus on at other times of the year when we prepare for the trip, or when we raise money for the orphanage we visit.
Keywords:
- Sunrise over Uluru
- Backpacking in Asia
- Meeting new cultures
- City life in Sydney
- Visit to an orphanage in Thailand
- Aid work and fundraising campaigns
- Accommodation under the open sky
- Solo day and base camp
- Ice swimming, kayaking, caving, canyoning and rappelling
- Cooking on a campfire and outdoor activities
- Elephants, temples and tuk-tuks
- Tours in Norway and around the world
- Possibility of skydiving for those who wish
- Community and real experiences
…and much more! You help shape the year!
Outdoor life and activities
Using nature and the surrounding area is also a large part of the experience this year. Through the scheme, you will get a basic introduction to outdoor life, so that you are equipped to plan and carry out your own trips in the future.
Through many of the activities we do, you will be able to learn more about both yourself and your fellow students. The year at Reis Explore gives you unique, big, small, fun, strenuous, challenging, educational and good experiences together with others.
Tourism, country, people and culture
Throughout the year, we work with small and large trip plans, which gives an opportunity to gain an insight into the tourism industry. Keywords here will be itinerary, orders/bookings, budget, travel content, etc.
The greatest experience in this subject will of course be the work around and the completion of the line's study tour to Australia and Asia. Through preparatory work, the journey and post-work, you have the opportunity to gain insight and knowledge in a great way!
Cooking food from the countries we visit is a fun and tasty experience. When we get to see and learn about the culture and people we will meet on our travels, it gives us a better and deeper understanding of the world, but also about ourselves.
Within this subject, we also look at cultural understanding in a more general context. There are global challenges that we should know about, and which should perhaps create commitment among us.
During the big study trip in the spring, we will also try to plan a visit to the Baan Civit Mai orphanage in Chiang Rai, Thailand. This is one of the aid projects the school supports.
Who is the line suitable for?
The line is suitable for those who are adventurous and want to challenge themselves – out in nature and out in the world. You don't need experience, just a desire to join in on a year out of the ordinary.
Travel - Australia and Asia
We are embarking on a four-week trip to Australia and Asia, where you will also be able to help shape the travel plans.
In Australia We check out Sydney, see the sunrise over Uluru, experience great waves at Bondi Beach, snorkel in clear water, learn about Aboriginal culture and relax "Down Under". There will also be the opportunity to try skydiving for those who wish!
Asia is about colorful markets, local organizations, temples and holy places and introductions to new cultures, plus the food and warmth we all love. Thailand and Vietnam have often been on the programme, where a visit to the Baan Chivit Mai orphanage in northern Thailand is an extra heart-warming highlight.
School Trip to Spain & Gibraltar
In the fall, the entire school travels together to Spain and Gibraltar!
In the fall, the entire school travels together to Spain and Gibraltar. We explore the Andalusia region and stay near the town of Rota, where students take part in both planned activities and free-time experiences. There are opportunities for surfing, frisbee golf, scenic cycling tours, and beach-related activities. The trip also includes a visit to the historic city of Seville and the British territory of Gibraltar.
Since the trip and all meals are included in the tuition fee, students only need to bring personal spending money. These shared experiences help build a strong sense of community across the school.

Teachers on the course

Johanne Ottilie Espe
Johanne is a big supporter of the folk college as a learning platform. Here, the students' interests are given room to play, and they get the opportunity to explore different subjects without the pressure of exams and grades.
With a background as a lecturer, a master's degree in cultural encounters and study experience from Bolivia, India and Germany, Johanne brings a broad educational experience to the table. The commitment also extends to voluntary work and an active relationship with community development.
